Workshop Update
News, events and resources
The Workshop is looking for a new logo! So we're holding a contest, open to the public, with a prize of $200 for the winner. We're looking for something contemporary and sophisticiated but dignified. The design must contain the phrase "DFW Writers' Workshop." The deadline for design submissions is July 16, 2007. More detailed specifications and submission instructions are in this PDF. Good luck! It was a dark and stormy night: Do you have a story to tell? Is it a science fiction or fantasy story under 5000 words? Then our third annual FenCon Short Story Contest is for you! The first entry is free for members of FenCon and just $10 for non-members. Final judging will be conducted by top industry pros and the winner will be published in the FenCon IV Souvenir Program Book. Entries must be received July 14th, 2007. Check out the FenCon Short Story Contest page for all the details. http://www.fencon.org
All right, I know there's a lot of conferences but not every one of them 1) Is within reasonable driving distance of Fort Worth 2) Has as celebrity tie-in a writer loved as much as Tony Hillerman Yes, Hillerman hismself will be addressing the conference attenders, in addition to the usual writer's conference fare: workshops with writers, editors, and agents, pitch sessions, and schmoozeathon cocktail party and meals. Sounds like it might be worth going. At least to me ... But then, let's be honest. I never need much of an excuse to go to New Mexico.
Candace will be signing her third novel in the adventures of Bronwyn, Charmed and Deadly, at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 9 at the Barnes & Noble bookstore in North Richland Hills. The Workshop will be there to support and congratulate her. We'll see you all there! Click here for directions to the store. Labels: Booksignings
A trio of success stories from the Workshop
The last few months have seen three exciting book launches by Workshop members. First came the debut novel of Rosemary Clement Moore, Prom Dates From Hell. Soon after followed the third novel by A. Lee Martinez, A Nameless Witch. And now, this week, Candace Havens is coming out with her third novel, Charmed & Deadly. Congratulations to all three! They've got bright futures ahead of them. What a great time to be in the Writers' Workshop, where writers with this kind of talent gather. Labels: Success stories
Wednesday May 30, 1:08 pm ET Editorial to include relationship books, self-help, memoirs and biographies http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/070530/nyw115.html?.v=97 TORONTO, May 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Harlequin Enterprises Limited, one of the world's leading publishers of women's fiction, announced today that they will enter the nonfiction market in the fall of 2008. Harlequin will publish titles in numerous genres, including relationship, health, self-help, diet, fitness, inspirational, memoir and biography, as well as companion pieces to successful fictional series by the company's many bestselling authors. "Harlequin's entry into the nonfiction market builds upon our existing strengths as a publisher who provides millions of women around the world with great entertainment and a rewarding reading experience," says Donna Hayes, Publisher and CEO of Harlequin Enterprises Limited. Industry analysis and reader feedback clearly indicate that the nonfiction category holds tremendous opportunity for Harlequin, with its unique stature as a publisher of content for women. Harlequin had tremendous success with Friends: A Love Story by Angela Bassett and Courtney B. Vance. Spotlighting the compelling real-life love story of the Hollywood power couple and published in February 2007 under the Kimani Press imprint, Friends: A Love Story was a New York Times bestseller and marked Harlequin's very first nonfiction romance story. Harlequin is not creating a new imprint for the nonfiction program. Instead, the books will be author/title-led and will be published under Harlequin's existing imprints, based on their content. "The publishing strategy will focus on content that entertains, supports, inspires and provides insights to women as their lives and roles change," says Loriana Sacilotto, Executive Vice President, Global Publishing & Strategy. "The editorial will concentrate on such categories as health, diet, fitness, self-help, motivational and relationship books as well as narrative nonfiction -- nonfiction that tells a story, such as memoirs and biographies -- and will cater to women 35 years and older." About Harlequin Enterprises Limited Harlequin Enterprises Limited is the global leader in series romance and one of the world's leading publishers of women's fiction, with titles issued worldwide in 26 languages and sold in 109 international markets.
